Core i9 vs Threadripper : Who is giving you more power
Intel and AMD is having a close rivalry between themselves in the computer processor market for past few years. And as they are back with new additions to their flagships, let's check out who is having the edge. In general perception, people prefer Intel when perfotmance and speed matter the most, irrespective of the cost. In the contrary, AMD is chosen when we want a satisfactory performance along with saving some money.
First we go through the technical specifications.
Intel Core i9:-
Overview:-
From the list, we can see that till now AMD has not brought any processor with 18 cores unlike Intel's i9 Extreme Edition. So, Intel is having the advantage here. Intel Core i9 processors have been built with Skylake-X architecture and AMD Threadripper processors are built with "Zen" core architecture, which is said to be providing an improved core engine and an improved cache system, offering a smoother performance. AMD TR's heatspreader is very bulky in size, so much, that AMD had to provide extra chip support to fit the heat spreader. It won't come with any liquid cooler also, but user can place a bracket adapter to fit a liquid cooler. In overclocking, the core i9 is producing unacceptable heat as learnt from users' experiences.
Now let's discuss products from both manufacturers with similar features.
Core i9-7960X vs TR 1950X: Both has 16 cores and 32 threads. AMD is offering a greater base clock speed but Intel will still win if we talk about highest output cause its maximum or boosted clock speed on load is better. Both i9 and TR come unlocked, so overclocking comes as a viable option specially in gaming and graphics work. Ryzen 1950X is available with a larger TDP (180 W, meanwhile i9 7940X is offering 165W. So theoretically it can be expected that Ryzen will be less affected when you are overclocking.
Core i9-7920X vs TR 1920X: Like before, Ryzen is available with a better base clock speed but Intel is beating AMD in overclocking. Number of cores and threads are same. As well, AMD is again offering a more heating efficient processor than Intel. Like 1950X, 1920X also has TDP of 180W where i9-7920X offers you 140W TDP.
Compatibility of Chipset and Motherboard:
Either of the two does not have any compatibility advantage. AMD's Threadripper uses AMD X399 chipset which requires 4,094 bump LGA socket, named TR4. While Core i9 uses Intel X299 chipsets, which require 2,066 bump LGA socket, i.e., Socket R4, engaging less space than X399. But on the other hand X399 has a full 66-lanes of PCIe gen. 3.0 while Intel X299 has 44 lanes.
Opinion:
AMD Threadripper 1950X is now being said as the "most powerful consumer CPU ever unleashed upon mankind". But it is hard for TR to compete with the 7980XE which got more powers from manufacturers. But on comparable ground, AMD becomes the winner this time keeping cost and performance both in mind. AMD is providing similar (In some terms, better) features in much low cost, then why you will spend more of your hard earned money on Intel.
