Edward Snowden: former NSA employee turned whistleblower |
Few
years ago, a data analyst of National Security Agency (NSA), United States of
America, created a lot of chaos around his name. His name was Edward Snowden.
He unveiled some classified information of the intelligence agency. Since then,
a lot of dramas, legal issues, lawsuits happened. However, this computer techie
has now come up with great idea which can change the whole face of our
well-known domestic security system.
Snowden’s idea is to turn a mobile device into a kind of
motion sensor with the help of an app with a view to notify you when your
device is being under any suspicious activity. The app can also notify you if a
stranger has entered into your room, if someone has moved your things. In an
interview, Snowden says that an android smartphone has everything required to
build up a domestic surveillance system. A camera on both sides, 3 microphones,
wireless communication facilities, accelerometer, internet connectivity-everything
that is required for a strong surveillance system.
Snowden announced Haven as an open source project.
Which means the published app is beta version and developers around the world
is welcome to make necessary changes and help improve it. Haven turns a device
into a motion, sound, vibration and light sensor. It sends notification to your
personal phone if your laptop has been moved or tampered with. All you need is
another android smartphone which will be your ‘Haven phone’ and then you just
need to place the Haven phone on your laptop before leaving. Whenever Haven
detects any unexpected movement, light or anything suspicious-it logs what
happened. It will send photos, recorded audios to your main phone to alert you
what has happened. To make this system more secured, Snowden has shunned idea
of using cloud storage. The notifications which your Haven phone will send to
your main phone, will not be stored in any cloud storage. The notifications you
will receive on your main phone will be 128bit end-to-end encrypted over
signal. Hence, it’s absolutely private and secured. It will be very hard for
anyone to spy over your Haven connections.
Edward Snowden has released the app ‘Haven: Keep Watch’ with
a collaboration with The Guardian Project, a media body who released his
unveiled information about CIA and NSA. In the description of the app, the publishers
have written ‘We designed Haven for investigative journalists, human rights
defenders, and people at risk of forced disappearance to create a new kind of
herd immunity. By combining the array of sensors found in any smartphone, with
the world’s most secure communications technologies like Signal or Tor, Haven
prevents the worst kind of people from silencing citizens without getting
caught in the act’.
