NEW YEAR, NEW OS FOR YOUR SMARTPHONE: MEET EELO
Do you love
the freedom to use different applications from different sources but disgusted
with its privacy issues? Or you prefer the security of iOS
but feel caged as an user with the iPhone? Many users out there are facing this problem. Which one to go for-
Android’s freedom and customizability or Apple’s security. With these two smartphone
operating systems combinedly holding nearly 98-99% share of the global smartphone
market, none of them has till now satisfied its users simultaneously in either
fields. Same things happened with Gaël Duval, the developer of Mandrake Linux
(1998) (now Mandriva Linux). So he went on to create his own OS to meet all of his needs. And thus
how he came up to introduce EELO. Though he is not alone. He has teamed with
two other developers in this project- Hathibelagal Ashraff (lead developer)
from India and Rhandros Dembicky from Brazil (UI/UX designer).

With
Android becoming largest smartphone OS platform worldwide, Google, its parent
company, uses a lot of users’ data to generate more earnings. We know that
Google’s prime source of income is its advertising activities. It thrives on your
smartphone data, your app uses, your locations, your internet browsing and
produce personalized ads for you. Huge threat to your privacy, isn’t it?
On the
other hand, Apple has focused a lot on user safety and consequently, playing
with third-party apps and open-source projects is not allowed on the iOS
platform. Apple allows only those apps which are available in the AppStore and
you cannot use apps or any other media files from any other sources. So you may
feel caged in Apple.
Here comes
EELO. EELO is an attempt to provide its users with a smartphone experience
where the users don’t have to worry about data privacy concerns and enjoy the
freedom to choose between services from other third-party developers.
Currently, EELO is basically an extension of Lineage OS with a modified
launcher and some Apple ‘inspired’ icons. Duval has announced EELO as an
open-source project for now and welcomed developers to volunteer them in this
project. EELO will provide credible alternatives to those users who are concerned
about their online security and data-privacy: smartphone OS and associated
web-services. EELO wants to create the eco-system where user will have full
liberty to choose the apps they really like to use. The developers believe that
EELO will prevent the users’ dependence on the giants of the IT industries and
will help small developers to grow their projects. EELO will be as consistent
and comfortable as iOS and as fun as Android, according to Duval. Duval has
said “I have called the project eelo because eels are small fishes that can
hide into the sea. That’s perfect for my quest for more privacy”.

Cloud atmosphere for EELO |
“I want eelo to be a non-profit project,
a project “in the public interest”. I think operating systems and web services
should be a shared resource: as I explained a few years ago, they are
infrastructures, like phone networks, rail tracks, roads.”
“Non-profit
doesn’t mean nothing will be for sale. Probably some eelo smartphones will be
for sale, and some premium services will be available for corporates. But
profit won’t be the first focus of eelo.”
An EELO smartphone is also in the pipeline. The eelo
project will release attractive privacy-enabled ROMs and web-services also.
Thank you for reading friends and we wish all of our users a very happy new year:-)
